Philosophy of Mathematics
Mathematics has been a part of every person’s life every single day. Many people do not realize this fact but those of us who do see its beauty. The beauty of math is in the architecture we all appreciate, buildings like the Taj Mahal and the Philips Pavilion. It is in the astounding complexity of nature that we all marvel at, such as the Fibonacci spiral inside a sea shell and the symmetry of flowers. It is in the organization of well-kept finances, the perfect balancing of a check book. It is in the science of predicting ever changing trends.
Mathematics also creates a beauty of its own when someone studies it. When you study math you begin to see how beautiful it is, in a way it is an art form. It allows people to see patterns and how everything comes together. Studying math also teaches people things that are not so straight forward. Math teaches us that almost every problem will have some solution. It teaches us that we have to create a strong foundation or else we will stumble. It teaches us that patience is a virtue unlike any other. It teaches us that sometimes we have to ask for help because we can’t always do things on our own. All of these lessons carry through peoples entire lives; they aren’t only applicable to mathematics.
Mathematics also gives those of us who love it skills that some others may not have. These skills also carry through our entire lives; they don’t just apply to math. Those who love math are usually very organized and efficient. These are two very important skills in today’s society because everyone wants everything done as soon as possible and as neatly as possible. These skills also help to improve time management allowing people to accomplish goals in a timely mannor. Also those of us who love math tend to have analytical thinking skills. We can think through a situation clearly and effectively, we rarely get burdened by a daunting task.
Personally I believe that the love I have for math is not just for the numbers themselves. More than anything I love the wisdom and skills that it has given me all of my life. I can always carry these lessons with me through any type of situation.
